Before You Begin

  • Check with IT: Confirm your IT admin has set up Merlyn for your district
  • What's in your Merlyn kit: USB receiver and remote control
  • What you'll need: Your district login credentials
  • Time to finish: <10 minutes
Windows OS MacOS ChromeOS

Step 1: Install Required Software (5 minutes)

  • Install the Chrome Extension:
    • Works with Chrome or Edge browsers
    • PC and Mac users: Click here
    • ChomeOS/Chromebook users: Click here to start the onboarding guide
  • Install the Desktop App:
    • PC and Mac users: Click here
      • For Mac users: Drag the app into your Applications folder after downloading
    • ChromeOS/Chromebook users: You will install everything you need from the onboarding guide
      Note: If you are unable to install the program directly, your District IT team may have added the application to your Company Portal or Self Service app directory. 

Step 2: Connect Your Hardware (1 minute)

  • Plug the USB receiver into your computer.
    • If you don't have a USB-A port on your computer, you can use a USB-A to USB-C adapter.
  • Remove the battery tab from your remote
  • Remove the QR code sticker from the front of the remote
  • To confirm functionality, click the AirMouse button and move the remote around. You should see the mouse moving on your screen. If not, remove the USB receiver then re-connect it. 
    Note for Mac users: If you see a "keyboard not identified" message, simply click "Quit"

Step 3: Launch and Sign In (1 minute)

  • Open the Merlyn Desktop App
  • Sign in with your district credentials (same email for both app and Teacher Toolkit)
  • The Merlyn icon will appear in your system tray/menu bar

Step 4: Test out the basic functions (2 minutes)

  • Basic remote functions:
    • Press the small orange button to access the Merlyn menu
    • Use the pointer button to control your cursor, and the big orange button to click
    • Use the D-pad to scroll on pages or move across tabs
  • Try these voice commands:
    • Press and hold the microphone button while speaking
    • Say "What time is it?" or "Open my browser"
    • Say "Help" to access all help articles
